Option A DJI

DJI Zenmuse L3

Best Overall LiDAR Drone System

The DJI Zenmuse L3 sits at the top of DJI's aerial LiDAR line: up to 2,000 kHz pulse rate (2 million pulses per second), up to 16 returns at the 100/350 kHz rates, and a 900 m default detection range. Our primary LiDAR payload for surveying and mapping.

Pros

  • Best published accuracy of DJI's LiDAR line
  • Up to 16 returns for vegetation
  • 900 m default detection range
  • Up to 2,000 kHz pulse rate
  • Mechanical shutter 100 MP RGB

Cons

  • Requires enterprise drone
  • Higher cost
  • Learning curve

Option B DJI

DJI Zenmuse L2

Best Value LiDAR Drone System

The DJI Zenmuse L2 delivers up to 1,200,000 pts/s on multiple returns (240,000 single return), 5 returns and a 450 m detection range at 50% reflectivity. Well suited to smaller survey operations and construction monitoring.

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Lighter weight
  • Good accuracy
  • Proven platform

Cons

  • 5 returns vs 16
  • Shorter range
  • Less vegetation penetration

Our Expert Verdict

Winner: DJI Zenmuse L3

For professional LiDAR surveying the DJI Zenmuse L3 is the strongest sensor — up to 2,000 kHz pulse rate, up to 16 returns and a 900 m default detection range — provided you fly a Matrice 400. The L2 remains excellent value and is the option for M350 RTK / M300 RTK fleets.

Choose DJI Zenmuse L3 if...

Choose L3 for professional surveying, forestry and corridor mapping where maximum accuracy and vegetation penetration matter — on a Matrice 400.

Choose DJI Zenmuse L2 if...

Choose L2 for construction monitoring, smaller sites, existing M300/M350 fleets, or when budget is a primary concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the L3 worth the extra cost?

For professional surveying, yes: up to 16 returns (at 100/350 kHz) versus 5, and a 900 m default detection range versus 450 m at 50% reflectivity — materially better vegetation penetration. Budget for the platform too, since the L3 flies only on the Matrice 400.

What drone do I need?

DJI lists one supported aircraft for the Zenmuse L3: the Matrice 400 (with the L3 single gimbal connector). The Zenmuse L2 is listed for the Matrice 400, Matrice 350 RTK and Matrice 300 RTK.

Can I upgrade from L2 to L3?

Only together with the aircraft. The L3 is not supported on the Matrice 350 RTK or 300 RTK — DJI lists the Matrice 400 as its only platform, so an L2-to-L3 move is a platform decision as much as a sensor decision. Contact us for options.
